Local MP will stand in the 2016 London mayoral election
Wandsworth, Earlsfield and Tooting MP, Sadiq Khan, has been selected by the Labour party as their candidate to stand for election as Mayor of London next year.
Mr Khan won a 58.9 per cent share in the fifth round of voting. Tessa Jowell came second with 41.1 per cent of the vote, while Diane Abbott was placed third. The other candidates were Gareth Thomas, Christian Wolmar and David Lammy.
He said, "I am deeply humbled that so many Londoners have put their faith in me today. Together we can change London."
He stood down from the Shadow Cabinet in May, ahead of his Mayoral selection bid.
Elected Labour MP for Tooting in 2005 and re-elected in 2010, Sadiq Khan lives in the borough and was a councillor for over a decade before being elected local MP. He has served as Shadow Lord Chancellor as well as Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and, from 2013, Shadow Minster for London.
Mr Khan, who nominated Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour Party leadership, says he will stand down as MP for Tooting if he is elected Mayor.
The Conservatives are still to chose their candidate.
