Southside Shopping Centre has revealed new plans to redevelop an outdated wing of the building.

Metro Shopping Fund ("Metro") says the works would prepare the part of the centre known as Arndale Walk for the arrival of a 'major national retailer'.

A run of new shop units would also be created along Garratt Lane, replacing the tired building frontage and improving the appearance of this part of Wandsworth Town.

There would also be upgrades to public space immediately outside the shopping centre including hard and soft landscaping.

A planning application is to be submitted to Wandsworth Council.

Metro has also commissioned artist Wolfgang Buttress to design a large piece of public art which would be located outside TK Maxx on Wandsworth High Street. 

Southside has benefited from a series of major investments in recent years and this deveopment marks another step forward for the site's regeneration.

Earlier this year planning permission was granted to redevelop a derelict part of the shopping centre site located opposite the burial ground on Garratt Lane.

This phase of works will create a new three storey building which joins up with the existing shopping centre frontage at Café Nero. 

At street level it will provide a row of glass fronted shops, bars, cafes and restaurants along with an outdoor seating area on the first floor. The surrounding pavement and street fixtures will also be upgraded as part of the scheme.

Wandsworth Town centre has benefited from a wave of new investment over the last few years including the opening of a new town centre library, the redevelopment of Hardwick's Way, Smuggler's Way, Buckhold Road, South Thames College and a new residential block overlooking King George's Park.

Specialist London developer Mount Anvil has recently begun work on the Wandsworth Business Village and Cockpen House schemes which together will transform more than 3 acres of land between the high street and King George's Park.

Planning permission has already been approved for the East Hill Hotel and the redevelopment of Sainsbury's which would further enhance the area.

The council is also expecting a fresh application for the regeneration of the Ram Brewery site which could pave the way for a redesign on the town centre one-way system.
