Over the last few weeks a privately owned residential block in the Wandsworth Common area has been targeted by burglars on a number of occasions. Local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), Quijano-Amigo, identified the trend at this venue and contacted and spoke to each of the residents alerting them to the problem.

A security survey of the building was arranged by the officer and a residents meeting was held where the results were discussed and crime prevention advice given.

Last Saturday team officers in plain clothes were stationed close to the vicinity of the block around the time that most of the break-ins had occurred. They responded to a call to the block where two males had been seen breaking into the communal garages and attempting to steal a motorbike.

The officers stopped and detained two males very close to the venue whom they recognised from previous dealings. The men matched the descriptions of the suspects on this occasion and were subsequently arrested for burglary. It is believed that these men are the ones who have repeatedly targeted the block. The male resident who informed police did so on advice given by PCSO Quijano-Amigo.

Sergeant Jerry Ostrowski of Wandsworth Common Safer Neighbourhoods team says: “Having local knowledge of problems and acting on them is the beauty of Safer Neighbourhoods. PCSO Quijano-Amigos awareness campaign together with PC Crofts and PC O’Hares proactive approach apprehended two burglars. This example illustrates perfectly that Safer Neighbourhood teams work simultaneously on proactive and educational tactics to solve local crime.”
