Royal wedding fever in Wandsworth is hotting up with dozens of street parties planned across the borough to celebrate the big day.

So far 61 street parties have been approved and more are being considered. This tally is thought to be the highest number of any London borough – proving that Wandsworth residents are the capital’s street party champions.

And for those people who haven’t yet organised their own neighbourhood get-together – there is still time to apply. Applications for a street party can be made up to 5pm on Monday, April 18.

Organising a Royal wedding street party couldn’t be easier. The council has stripped away all the red-tape, bureaucracy and cost that was once associated with arranging this type of event.

There is no charge for residents who want to close their roads to traffic and all the other arrangements can be submitted online by filling in a simple internet questionnaire.

The council’s environment and culture spokesman Cllr Sarah McDermott said: “We're delighted that so many people in Wandsworth will be celebrating this special royal occasion by enjoying a street party with their neighbours.

"The town hall has got rid of all the red tape and bureaucracy that used to make it difficult for organisers and as a result we have seen huge levels of interest from people keen on bringing  their neighbours together to mark this historic day.

“And there is still a week left for people who want to organise their own community event. As long as they apply by next Monday’s deadline, anyone thinking of arranging a royal wedding street party in Wandsworth will be offered our full assistance and support.”

Prince William and Catherine Middleton will be married at Westminster Abbey on Friday, April 29, a day that has been designated a bank holiday.
