Southside Shopping Centre

Could anyone please advise me when new shops are going to occupy the vacant units in the above shopping centre. Admittedly, Wandsworth shopping centre is a million times better than what it was but there is still room for much more improvements. The Wandsworth High street entrance is not very inviting because apart from Vodafone, O2 & a few other shops the vast majority of the other units are unoccupied. Also the centre is always leaking and there is usually a bucket to collect the rain water & warning signs around it. I want to support my local shopping centre but more needs to be done to encourage me & others to do so....

I have seen posters round the borough asking us to support local shops.In Tooting the only shops I would have used have closed down, the rest need a good clean and I would not want anything from them. If they want our custom surely they should encourage us.

I was in there at the weekend and it did seem very quiet. Probably the Westfield effect.

It seems to me a microcosm of what is wrong with every British High Street. Nearly every store part of a big chain and so the place exudes corporate characterlessness. It does seem to be in decline at the moment and given that they should already be seeing a boost for Christmas this is a concern.

There are lots of community based businesses who would love to get premises at Southside but they don't fit the profile that the landlord and management wants for the place.

Recesson might mean lower rents and more locally owned independents stores moving in. That said I'm happy to see Gap moving in.

I was hopeful that Wandsworth will get a bit of a boost from the brewery redevelopment.That might have attracted a few firms into the Southside centre.Unfortunately the coming recession will probably remove more shops than we gain, so the centre is probably doomed to deteriorate again.

Have you noticed that the same company is buying the stores up. We are waiting to see what will take their place

I've noticed that even Mothercare in Tooting has closed down & unless the Council does more to attract High st stores it looks like they will all be deserting Wandsworth...

Eva you asked this question in April 2006 and you still havent got an answer.Marks and Spencer in Tooting is closing down soon and the larger chains do not seem keen to open in Wandsworth. It is probably because the council are reluctant to repair roads and pavements and the whole place has a ramshackle look
