To fix or to replace that old boiler?
I am often asked whether it is better to replace an old boiler or to fix it?My answer is that it depends on the age of the boiler and whether it is a condensing (high efficiency) boiler or not.If it is the latter then it will probably have been installed since 2004 and parts should still be readily available, so a repair should definitely be considered. If it is non condensing then I would seriously consider replacing it: depending on the efficiency of your boiler you can save 20% - 30% on your gas bill by upgrading it - that is £2-£3 out of every £10 you spend on gas.....There are some guidelines from the Energy Savings Trust on their website http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/Heating-and-hot-water/Replacing-your-boiler.Obviously it comes down to cost, but be aware that throwing good money away on fixing an old boiler with no warranty, that could be contributing to a new boiler with a long warranty, may not be the best long term solution.
