Calling All Perplexed Putney Cyclists

Trying to clarify the current diversions due to roadworks

As you travel through Putney, you will be aware that there are currently diversions for the next few months because of roadworks. These are different to those originally advertised, and seemed to be causing some confusion, leading to complaints from residents and cyclists alike: cyclists have been cycling the wrong way through the roadworks, but in some instances had been led there by inadequate signage! After this was raised on the forum on this site, I did a little investigation, had some discussion with local cyclists & residents, and an exchange of emails with Richard Tracey from the London Assembly, as it appeared that the signage was not all as it should be. I'd like to confirm that all diversions and signage should now be in place as follows.

Westbound, Upper Richmond Road is closed from the junction with West Hill to East Putney tube station. The cyclists' diversion is via Putney Bridge Road and Oxford Road. Fawe Park Road (which was the original diversion) is also closed for roadworks. If coming from the Wandsworth one way system or Point Pleasant, the diversion should now be clearly signed for cyclists at the bottom of West Hill and at the bottom of Oakhill Road.

Eastbound travel is mostly ok, except that Fawe Park Road is shut.

Police are stopping and cautioning cyclists on Upper Richmond Road and there should be no excuse for cycling against the one-way traffic flow or on the pavement. Police have also been responsive and proactive in the positioning of signage, so if anything is not clear or if signs go missing, do let them know, or contact Richard Tracey directly Richard.Tracey@london.gov.uk
