Two evacuations made in Wandsworth Fire
It has been reported that firefighters had to perform a rescue operation when attempting to put out a fire which began on the fifth floor of a tower block yesterday morning.
Firefighters saved two people who were trapped in the 24-storey Sudbury House in Wandsworth. The fire is said to have started in a flat within the building, which is located above a shopping centre.Fire crews had to evacuate the building and in doing so were required to rescue a person on the third level and another on the fifth using an aerial ladder. Station manager for the London Fire Brigade Barry Newstead said:
“Crews worked very hard to confine the fire to the flat.“We had two rescues, one from the third floor and one from the fifth. The man on the fifth floor suffered smoke inhalation. We implemented our high-rise building procedures and that worked very well.”
Due to the blaze there have been a number of road closures in the area, including part of Wandsworth High Street and Garratt Lane.
The fire teams are now damping down the fire before an investigation is ready to begin into the exact cause of the flat blaze.
