A resident from West Hill in Wandsworth has won the first round of this year’s Golden Ticket recycling prize draw.
Mrs Itani has won £500 in the draw which rewards local people for recycling correctly, with eight runners-up each winning £250.

The Golden Ticket prize draw winner can also nominate a registered community group for a £2,500 community prize. Mrs Itani decided the lucky recipient should be Home Start Wandsworth.

Chairman Laura Lewis said: “We’re thrilled to have been nominated to benefit from this fantastic scheme. The generous cheque will go towards supporting Wandsworth's vulnerable young families and ensuring they get the help they need to raise their families in a positive, safe and healthy way.”

The council’s environment spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook handed over the cheque. He said: “I’m delighted that so many Wandsworth residents entered the draw, and that the winner chose such a worthy recipient for the community award. The council supports this scheme because it encourages people to recycle – and recycle correctly.”

The Golden Ticket competition is run by the Western Riverside Waste Authority (WRWA). WRWA is responsible for waste disposal and sorting the mixed recycling collected across the London boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Wandsworth and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

People can enter every time they recycle using clear sacks or orange-lidded banks, but only tickets found with the correctly-recycled items will be entered. So tickets found with non-recyclable items, such as wood or polystyrene, or things that should have been recycled separately, such as old clothes, will not be included in the draw.

This is the second year the competition has been held. Last year charities that benefited included Transition Town Tooting, Share Community and the Graveney Canteen.

There will be one further draw this year, on March 24. To be in with a chance of winning, put your details on a ticket and pop it in your recycling. Ticket are available at the council’s customer service centre in Wandsworth High Street or the housing office reception in Putney Bridge Road and in leisure centres and libraries or you can download them online
