as secondary school deadline approaches
Parents of children who will be applying to join a secondary school next
year are being reminded that they must submit their choice of schools
to the town hall by Friday, October 22.
Under a new London-wide system to co-ordinate the admissions process,
parents can now select up to six local authority maintained schools and
rank these in order of preference on a single form. The schools can be
anywhere in London.
Each of the named schools will then tell their local council which pupils
it can offer a place to. Councils then sift the offers to ensure that
the one from the highest placed school is made to the parent. Individual
schools are not told which other schools the parent has chosen.
Using a new London-wide database, councils are able to swap information
on the offers they plan to make so that only one offer is sent out by
the parent�s local council.
The new system is designed to ensure that parents do not receive more
than one offer of a place. Previously some parents could collect a number
of offers from different schools while others would receive none.
Under the new arrangements, the single offer will be made to parents by
their local council on the same day - March 1, 2005.
A full explanation of the new arrangements was included in a special booklet
that Wandsworth Council issued at the start of the current academic year
to the parents of all children in their final year at local primary schools.
