urged 'don't choke Wandsworth'
The Council has organised a series of events
and activities as part of the annual 'Don�t Choke Wandsworth' travel awareness
campaign
�Don�t Choke Wandsworth� forms part of the Don�t Choke Britain campaign and once again a programme of events is planned to take place in the borough designed to encourage the motor vehicle driver to experience the benefits of using other modes of transport. It will also help people to think about how they can help to safeguard the environment when they travel.
The series of events in Wandsworth kicks off with the first of two �Walk to School Weeks' which commences on Monday, May 19 and again in the autumn from Monday September 29. Young people and parents are encouraged to walk to school to help reduce congestion and pollution whilst improving their health.
The �Walk to school� campaign, gives parents and teachers the opportunity to reinforce the importance of road safety skills for young people.
Last autumn a total of 36 schools took part in the event and Wandsworth Council's School Travel Plans Co-ordinator, Jane Greatholder invited all schools to take part in a competition to devise a display representing the young people's thoughts of Walk to School Week. Pupils at West Hill School were declared the winners of a supply of reflective armbands delivered by the famous Youngs Brewery Dray and presented by the Mayor of Wandsworth.
Other events scheduled for Don�t Choke Wandsworth include Green Transport Week which takes place from Saturday June 7.
The week aims to promote a range of transport alternatives to reduce congestion and pollution and the council is to host a travel awareness roadshow including demonstrations of electric cars, electric bikes and the distribution of a range of useful information including bus timetables, cycle maps and local transport guides.
The 'Travel Awareness Roadshow' will be at Asda supermarket, Clapham Junction on Wednesday June 11.
National Bike Week takes place from Saturday, June 14, when people are encouraged to leave their cars at home and cycle instead. 'Dr Bike' surgeries are also planned where cyclists can receive maintenance advice for their bicycles.
Don�t Choke Britain is co-ordinated by the Local Government Association with support from organisations including the Department of Environment Transport and the Regions, Going for Green, the Health Education Authority, the Travelwise Initiative, London Transport and Railtrack.
