In a seven month project
As part of the biggest road and pavement repair project to take place in Wandsworth for years, three council crews were tasked with tackling problem potholes in all of the borough’s 20 wards.
This week they started work in Earlsfield, Nightingale and West Hill – where they will remain until November when they turn their attention to the major improvement project’s final three wards.
To date, the crews have repaired 6,691 potholes in 14 wards:

• Wandsworth Common - 267
• West Putney - 375
• Queenstown - 942
• Northcote - 1,048
• Shaftesbury - 180
• Roehampton - 932
• Tooting - 419
• East Putney - 646
• Balham - 311
• Fairfield - 321
• Thamesfield - 296
Each month the repair crews have been focussing their efforts on specific wards before moving on to the next scheduled area, with the ultimate aim of covering the entire borough.
This doesn’t mean other urgent repairs elsewhere are being ignored. A rapid response team is dealing with those – and pothole repairs will carry on when required once the intensive repair project draws to a close at the end of November.
Wandsworth Council’s transport spokesman, Councillor Russell King, said:
“This repair project has been a huge undertaking – and it has clearly been well worth it because both road users and pedestrians have been noticing improvements to the borough’s streets.
“The end of this particular improvement programme may be in sight but members of the public can rest assured that our crews will always be ready and waiting to carry out repairs whenever they are called on to do so.”
A further three crews, which have been tasked with fixing pavement problems, are spending October carrying out repair work in St Mary’s Park, Wandsworth Common and West Putney. Previously, they carried out repairs in Graveney, Northcote, Shaftesbury, Roehampton, Southfields, Tooting, Balham, Fairfield, Thamesfield, Earlsfield, Nightingale, West Hill, Bedford and Latchmere.
The work is linked to the Cleaner Wandsworth campaign, which is working to make the borough's streets the cleanest in the capital
As part of the pothole and pavement repair project, many roads will be completely resurfaced and some roads will have their pavements completely re-laid. The table below shows some of the roads that have been resurfaced so far.
Leaflets will be sent to homes across the borough to let people know when the repair crews will be working in their neighbourhoods.
Wandsworth is responsible for 1,500 roads stretching over 360km with 746km of pavements, many of which were constructed more than 100 years ago.
