Some of the borough’s exceptional sports people, clubs and coaches have picked up trophies in the Active Wandsworth Awards.

The recent ceremony rewarded hard work and exceptional achievement in 2016, and marked 20 years of the Active Wandsworth network.

Gold medal-winning Olympian Phelan Hill and Paralympic bronze medallist Aaron McKibbin presented the trophies across 14 categories. The evening was hosted by Sky Sports News presenter David Garrido.

Putney based Olympic cox, Phelan Hill told this website: "It's always good to recognise sporting achievement, however for me the main part of the evening was recognising the incredible work of the volunteers. I was generally touched by the amazing volunteers, how much time they gave and the positive influence on lives they have. Volunteering is so important in sport, without them sport couldn't function so its great that we have awards nights like this that not just recognise the winners but also the nominees for their hard work and dedication they give."

The winners included:

Sports Person of the Year – Katy-Ann McDonald. Katy is the number one ranked under 16 athlete in the world over 800m and represented Great Britain and England during 2016

Junior Sports Person of the Year – Freya Peters. The spring and marathon kayaker collected the award following her success with Great Britain at the European and World Championships.

Physical Activity Project of the Year – GoodGym. The groups combines keeping fit with helping the community. Read more about GoodGym in Wandsworth.

Outstanding Contribution to Sport and Physical Activity – Dave Crilly and Nigel Taylor-Walk. Dave, from the Training Resource Centre, and Nigel from Battersea Ironsides have both devoted a number of years to community sport.

Wandsworth's leisure spokesman, Councillor Jonathan Cook, said: "We are lucky to have very many men and women in Wandsworth who devote their time to encouraging and developing sport in the borough, and it’s always a pleasure to recognise their efforts with an Active Wandsworth Award. Congratulations to all the worthy winners.”

The Active Wandsworth Awards are managed and delivered by Enable Leisure and Culture on behalf of Wandsworth Council.
