An exhibition of contemporary lace plus a chance to learn the ancient craft at the De Morgan Centre,
A group of contemporary lace makers is to give an ancient craft a twenty-first century edge with a new exhibition of modern lace.
To mark its 10th anniversary, the 98 Lace Group is bringing together the best of its work to challenge all preconceptions about this often delicate, intricate textile. No longer the preserve of old ladies in bonnets, the pieces exhibited range from wall-hangings to bags and vessels, all demonstrating the surprising possibilities of lace.
The pieces create colour and texture out of a web of different materials. Plastic, paper and raffia, metal, linen thread and wire are worked in different combinations to make a stunning whole, echoing the finest lace of the past while belonging firmly in the present.
The UK-wide fellowship of textile teachers and artists aims to revive and maintain the ancient skill of lace making to prevent it being lost for good.
Textile artist Cas Holmes selected the pieces for the exhibition. She said: “All pieces presented for selection demonstrated skill, time and patience. I chose work which married the traditional skills of hand-made lace with new ideas and materials to give a contemporary ‘twist’, where the design and ideas went beyond the technique and demonstrated that this 15th century craft had a relevance to the art and design of the 21st century.”
Highly skilled members of the group are offering a rare opportunity to learn their craft at the De Morgan Centre in a series of workshops for children and adults. (For details see contact numbers below).

Children's Beginners' Lace: Each child will complete a card with lace flower.
19 April, 10.00 for 10.30am, finishing 1pm including break
Tutors: Pat Brunsdon & Suzanne Jarvis.
Maximum number of children per workshop: 6
Minimum age: 7yrs. Parents need not accompany.
Charge: £10 + 50p for materials. All equipment provided by tutors.

Adult Taster Workshop: Wire Lace Jewellery
26 April, 10 for 10.30am - 4.30pm with 1hr break for lunch.
The aim of the course is to enable students to make at least one bobbin lace wire pendant to take home.

Equipment can be lent to those who have none - but must be pre-booked.
Charge: £30 + £2.50 for materials, assuming that the students work Jan's wire designs.
Design Workshop: The Hearing Eye (Adults)
17 May, 10 for 10.30am - 4.30/5pm with 30 min break for lunch.
The aim of this workshop is to produce visual pattern from musical stimulus, encouraging students to produce design suitable for interpretation in diaphanous textiles such as lace.

Students should bring their own equipment and a needs list will be provided in due course.
Charge: £35.

If coming on the M25: Leave at Junction 10 (A3) and head towards London. Carry on, through the underpass (sign posted Wandsworth). At the bottom of the hill, just after the junction with the A205 turn left into Santos Road which has a church on one corner and the library building housing the De Morgan Centre on the other. Santos Road is a parking street.
If coming through the centre of London: please bear in mind that roads around the bridges across the Thames can be very congested. Please leave plenty of time.
Parking:
There is no parking for visitors at the Centre. There is an NCP car park on Garrett Lane approximately 10 minutes walk away. Parking can also be found in the surrounding residential streets.

The De Morgan Centre and 98 Lace Group reserves the right to cancel any event. In the event of such a cancellation, any monies paid, will be refunded direct to the purchaser.
