Pupils Asked To Design For Holocaust Memorial Day

Wandsworth invites borough schools to take part in design competition

National Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on January 27 each year to remember those communities which were destroyed during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Wandsworth Council is encouraging students to create a piece of work based on the theme for the January 27 memorial day, which is Communities Together - Build a Bridge.

Those entering the contest can take inspiration from the past and present to create their designs – celebrating difference and aspiring for respect for all.

Any pupil in primary and secondary education can enter in one of the following categories:
• Poster or T-shirt design
• Poetry
• Photography

Teacher resource packs are available by visiting the Holocaust Memorial Trust website, http://education.hmd.org.uk.

All entries must be submitted to the council with a single entry form, clearly displaying the name of the school, entrant and the chosen category. This should be submitted or posted to Events Office, Staff Yard, Battersea Park, SW11 4NJ by January 27.

Prizes will be awarded to the winner and runner-up of each category, with the winners being announced at a prize giving event in February 2013.

Results will also be posted online at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/holocaustmemorialday. In addition, a selection of entries will be exhibited in some of Wandsworth’s libraries.

Wandsworth Council's cabinet member for education and children's services, Councillor Kathy Tracey, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day gives all of us a chance to reflect on the lessons learnt from the Holocaust and other past atrocities. I hope every young person taking part in the competition is able to use the experience, not only to learn important lessons from human history, but also to be inspired to help create a safer, brighter future.”
