New Police Boss Born & Bred In Wandsworth

Ch Supt Chinchen's first post was as a constable in the borough

On Monday 12 December, Chief Superintendent David Chinchen officially took over as the new Borough Commander of police in Wandsworth Borough.

Ch Supt Chinchen began his police career in 1981 and his very first posting as a police constable was to Wandsworth Police Station.

Since then he has served in Streatham, Southwark, Bromley, Sutton and has also undertaken postings at New Scotland Yard where he had responsibility for police operations set up to tackle knife crime, gangs and serious youth violence.

More recently Mr Chinchen served as Wandsworth Borough's lead for Operations and Partnership. He left Wandsworth in June 2011 to front Operation Target - the Met's biggest ever crack down tackling crime against people and property across some twenty London boroughs.

Born and bred in Balham and Tooting, he has always had strong connections with the borough. He and his family lived on a Dutch barge on the Wandsworth bank of the Thames for a number of years but have now returned to dry land in Tooting Bec.

Mr Chinchen was educated at Ernest Bevin School and went on to achieve a 1st Class Honours Degree in Geography from the University of Wales and a Masters Degree in Business Administration.

Welcoming his return to the borough, Cllr Govindia said:
“This is a very good appointment by the Met and is great news for Wandsworth. Chief Supt Chinchen is a highly experienced and very well respected police officer with a proven track record in tackling serious criminality. He has led some very important and successful pan-London campaigns for the Met and we are delighted to have an officer of his calibre working alongside us.

“Wandsworth has always prided itself on its successful partnership working with the police. It is one of the reasons why local crime levels have fallen so dramatically in recent years and why Wandsworth is without argument inner London’s safest borough.  We look forward to building on these successes with the new borough commander and all his officers in the months and years ahead.”

When he is not working Ch Supt Chinchen spends time with the family, tends a small garden and enjoys all that Wandsworth and London has to offer.
