Major Milestone Reached For Local Mental Health Facilities

Two new hospitals to be built at the Springfield and Tolworth sites

South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust has announce the selection of a preferred bidder to work alongside the Trust to progress its Estate Modernisation Programme (EMP) at its Springfield and Tolworth sites.

The programme will deliver two new hospitals at the Springfield and Tolworth sites and additional housing in a parkland setting.

The announcement of preferred bidder marks a significant milestone in the development of the EMP, and enables the proposals to be finalised for a full business case to be submitted to Government for approval.

The Trust ran a robust procurement process and will be working with Springfield and Tolworth Estate Partnership (STEP) - a 50/50 partnership with Kajima Partnerships and Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures Ltd - on this multi-million pound development which will transform the delivery of mental health services in south west London for generations to come.

The plans, once formally approved, will bring forward a range of benefits including:

· Two new campuses with in-patient facilities

· A 32 acre public park – providing outdoor space for the community

· Extensive community healthcare – treating people closer to their families and their home

· New homes – providing houses for local families in Tooting

· A state-of-the-art new school

· Over £5 million for new transport facilities

David Bradley Chief Executive said, “We are pleased to have reached this important milestone. The Trust has been developing the plans for two new hospitals for many years and we are delighted, after a robust procurement process, to have selected STEP to work alongside us to develop the more detailed plans as we move forward to delivering the new hospitals our patients desperately need.

" Our staff work hard every day to deliver the best care but our buildings are old and expensive to run. It is very important to us that we provide patients with the best facilities and services possible and we are pleased to have found a way to do this through raising our own funds. The Estate Modernisation Programme will transform the way we deliver mental health care for generations to come and ensure our patients receive the best care in first class modern facilities.”

STEP, a 50/50 partnership between Kajima Partnerships and Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures, said, “We are delighted to be working with South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust in delivering its Estate Modernisation Programme. We are very proud to be part of the Trust’s plans to provide state-of-the-art mental health facilities at the Springfield and Tolworth Hospital sites and look forward to bringing these plans to fruition.”

South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust (SWLSTG) serve 1.1 million people across the London boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth and employ more than 2,000 staff who provide care and treatment to approximately 20,000 people from south west London and beyond at any given moment.
