Bankers Buying Up Homes In Wandsworth

Borough ranks highly as a place where top earners buy

Lucky for some, Wandsworth ranks 13th in property website Primelocation’s top 20 places where bankers buy.

With a wide range of housing stock, from cute cottages and smart terraces through to vast semi and detached residences, the borough is a hot spot for city workers and their families to spend those bonuses.

Emma Seaton of Savills says: “We get a lot of buyers from the financial sector. The Toast Rack, next to the Common is very desirable and where they aspire to be – large 5-6 bed semis and detached houses ranging from £2.5-5million.

“In addition to large period properties, there are great green spaces, excellent schools and plenty of smart shops and cafes on Bellvue Road, including a Michelin starred restaurant – Chez Bruce.

“The Tonsleys are also popular with younger couples – especially with buyers getting their first bonus. We’ve sold a few there this year, all to investment bankers. Prices start at around £700,000 for a three-bed cottage. Here too there’s a lovely village feel – on Old York Road there’s an organic butcher, delis, cafes, and gastro pubs.

“We’re seeing a lot of interest from City buyers already – there’s limited stock on the market and the best homes are achieving very good prices. “

And it’s not just bankers who want to spend in the borough, high-profile entertainers and sports people also find Wandsworth desirable. Local celebrities such as Gordon Ramsey, Mark Owen, Phil Spencer, Sophie Dahl and Kevin Pietersen, have put down roots in the area.
