Cat's Back Bridge Replacement Now Under Way

Pedestrians and cyclists need to find alternative routes to cross the rail track

Cat's Back Bridge Replacement Now Under Way in Wandsworth SW18

Walkers and cyclists who regularly use the railway bridge that crosses Wandsworth Common will have to use an alternative route over the coming weeks while Network Rail engineers install a new bridge.

The ‘Cat’s Back’ pedestrian bridge is now closed and is not scheduled to reopen until early next month.

Network Rail is completely replacing the bridge in a project expected to last around five weeks.

The operation requires part of the common to be used temporarily as a works site and also means that the many people who use the bridge as a convenient shortcut will need to find an alternative route. The nearest crossing over the railway tracks is in Bellevue Road.

Cyclists who use the designated cycle path that leads to the bridge will also need to find alternative routes. None of the other paths on the common are designated as cycle routes.
