Collision believed to have involved van and motorcyclist

Major Accident Shuts Wandsworth Bridge

Wandsworth Bridge was closed both ways following an accident earlier this morning (4 May).

According to eye-witness reports there was a collision between a white van and a motorcyclist on the road leading to the southern side of the bridge. The collision is believed to have taken place shortly before 6.30am.

Wandsworth Police's Emergency Response Team attended the scene which they described as a road traffic collision, and are reporting that a male motorcyclist has been hospitalised in a non life-threatening condition.

Footage from Transport for London traffic cameras also shows a double decker bus stopped at the scene at the time of the incident.

Two fire engines attended along with a number of other emergency service vehicles.

The bridge has now reopened in both directions although the southbound bus lane remains closed.

There are still long queues throughout the area with tailbacks on West Hill and Putney Hill stretching back to Tibbet's Corner. Approaches to the bridge along East Hill, Putney Bridge Road, York Road and Trinity Road all affected with severe delays, as are surrounding streets.
