The creator of the temporary Nine Elms walkway that runs through New Covent Garden Market is asking local groups or businesses for their ideas on using the alcoves along the walk.
The colourful installation on Merchants Way links the new Northern line tube station Nine Elms – via the railway line and through the arch (which was opened up in September last year) - to Ponton Road and onto the Thames.
Artist and illustrator Anna Nicolò designed the Merchants Way installation, which celebrates the famous ‘Buyers Walk’ in the New Covent Garden Fruit and Vegetable Market with depictions of the rich heritage and architecture of the original market in central London, while also looking to the future of developer VINCI St. Modwen’s regeneration of the site. The walkway celebrates the history of the market and its traders, and it also salutes the evolution of the site as a place to work, invent, eat, and live featuring an LGBTQ+ rainbow crossings on either side of the pathway.
VINCI St. Modwen is now inviting anyone with a good idea as well as local businesses, groups, organisations to submit ‘expressions of interest’ in taking one of the alcoves during 2022.
The pathway houses three alcoves across its 150 metre length. Originally the spaces were designed to test new ideas and for seasonal activities. Located behind Victorian-style door panels, each opens up onto a purpose built space of approximately 4.5m x 2m x 2.4m tall with an electrical outlet.
Coffee Van operators, Little Livewire, are already serving up their brews and snacks in an alcove from Monday to Thursday 7.30am-12noon.

Walking her dog along the routeway (see below), artist Anna Nicolò said: “Buyer’s Walk is inspired by a celebration of this rich and colourful landscape, distilled into a bright and joyful pattern, bringing together the past and the future of the market. I hope it brings joy and happiness to all that use the pathway over the next few years.”

Nick Harrington, Senior Construction Manager for developer VINCI St. Modwen, said, “The new pathway will bring a vibrancy and vitality to the area, with a firm message of openness and inclusion as we look to redevelop further parts of the site.”
