take part in a voting contest that could generate money to improve two local parks
In Wandsworth people are being called on to back King George’s Park and the Latchmere Recreation Ground.
Voting for King George's Park could attract investment to pay for a wealth of improvements in the southern half of the park, including a new café, new children’s playground, more allotments, a new all weather pitch, junior cricket table and a major restoration project that would allow public access to the River Wandle. It could also help pay for new CCTV cameras in the park.
Supporting Latchmere Rec could help transform this small open space in Battersea, with new entrances, planting, better foothpaths and a range of additional improvements to a new childrens' playground that the council is planning to install next year.
Wandsworth's executive member for environment and leisure Cllr Malcolm Grimston said:
"People can help secure real benefits for these two local parks by taking part in this exciting initiative. Voting for King George's Park could result in a new playground and a new riverside footpath along the Wandle, while Latchmere Rec could also get extra improvements to an already-planned new playground, better entrances and improved footpaths."
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said:
"I urge residents of Wandsworth to use their vote so the most deserving parks in the capital benefit from ten hefty prizes. This investment will make the capital’s open spaces cleaner, safer, greener and more enjoyable places for Londoners to use. Parks provide a free place for families to enjoy time out and often simple improvements such as better play areas and improved lighting can make a real difference in making parks much more attractive and safer for people to use."
There are three ways to vote – online, by text message or by post. To cast your vote online and to find out more about the scheme, visit www.london.gov.uk/parksvote. To vote by text message, send the word PARKS followed by your full postcode to 62967 (eg PARKS SW185JJ). This will cast a vote for the park nearest your home address. More than 100 parks and open spaces were originally nominated by the London boroughs for the scheme but these were whittled down to a shortlist of 47 by a panel of experts.
To ensure the money is used on parks across London, the 47 parks have been divided into five London sub-regions ( North West, North, North East, South East and South West) with around ten parks per sub-region to vote on. The winners will be the two parks in each of the five London sub-regions which get the most votes.
This means that the two Wandsworth parks are in the South West sub region and will be competing against Norbury Park (Croydon), Wandle Park (Croydon) King Edward's Park (Kingston) Kennington Park (Lambeth), Spring Gardens (Lambeth) Ravensbury Park (Merton), Crane Valley Park (Richmond/ Hounslow), Wandle Valley with St Helier open spaces (Sutton).
