Ten ducklings have been rescued from a nest on an eighth floor balcony in a residential building in Nine Elms.
RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) Mark Hanley was called to the building by a resident earlier this month. A duck had nested on their balcony and hatched ten ducklings. Mark and his colleague moved the ducklings into a carrier and transported them to a wildlife hospital where they’ll be cared for until they’re able to be released back into the wild.
Mark said, “The ducklings had been hatched nearly 200 feet high on a balcony. Our advice is that if you find ducklings higher than four feet, which is the first floor of a building, they may need help getting down. If they were to remain there they’d have been at risk of falling from the nest, which could have been fatal.
“Our current advice is not to handle waterfowl due to bird flu (avian influenza), so in this instance the resident was right to call us. We used PPE to collect the ducklings safely and now they’ll have a much better chance of survival than if they’d been left at that height.”
The ducklings are now in the care of the wildlife hospital where they will remain until they are old enough to be released back into the wild.
