Wandsworth Town Centre Traffic Plan

Study bids to tame town centre traffic

A new Transport for Londonstudy is offering hope that at long last a solution to town centre traffic problems can be found.

The 12-month project will examine the options for a complete rethink of the Wandsworth one-way system.

The council is insisting that town centre developments demonstrate substantial transport benefits. This would include action to lessen the impact of traffic in the high street and improve public transport connections.

Council leader Edward Lister said:
"Getting the work started now means we will all be in a better position to know what improvements will be possible, what they are likely to achieve - and how much they will cost.

"Everyone knows we need to tame the traffic in the town centre. If we can find the right solutions we will secure the funding from the town centre developers who stand to benefit from the continuing regeneration of the area."

TfL's costs are being met by Young's brewery site developers Minerva whose planning application is due to be considered on December 3. The funding is not dependent on the outcome of the application.
