Who served as Mayor of Wandsworth in the 1970s

Tributes are being paid to former Mayor of Wandsworth Jean Standing, whose family have announced her passing.

Born in Portsmouth, Jean Standing moved to London just after the war and was among the first families to move into the Alton Estate, west of the borough.

She was first elected as a Labour councillor in Roehampton in 1964 and re-elected in 1968, serving as representative for the area until 1974. She was also elected mayor of the borough in 1972.

During her time on the council she served as Chairman of the Social Services Committee and also as a Justice of the Peace. She was also a governor of Elliott School and chair of governors at Heathmere Primary.

Wandsworth’s current Mayor, Cllr Leslie McDonnell, says, “It is with great sadness that we have learned of Jean Standing’s passing. She served the people of Roehampton with great distinction and with passion and understanding. She never forgot her roots and she never forgot the people who elected her. “

Her funeral is on May 3 at Porchester Crematorium in Fareham, Hampshire. Family Flowers only.
