And will return to his family in Wandsworth after 13 years

Britain's last detainee in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp has been told he will be released within a month.

The Wandsworth resident will return to his family from the United States Military prison where he has been held without charge or trial for thirteen years after accusations of terrorism.

Mr Aamer has repeatedly said that he suffered ill treatment in Guantanamo and has alleged British complicity.

The US military claimed he had significant ties to Islamic extremists, including Osama Bin Laden, and his release follows years of negotiation between Britain and the United States.

Born a Saudi national, Shaker Aamer married a British woman who lives in Wandsworth with their four children. On hearing the news of her father's release his daughter Johina Aamer tweeted, "Thank you everyone for all the support. The news hasn't hit yet. We can't believe we might finally see our Dad after 14 years."
