The attacks happened on Saturday 30th May. The victim, a 24-year-old woman, had been out with friends in the West End. At about 3am she left to go to Trafalgar Square and get a night bus back to her home in Wandsworth.

As she travelled home the victim noticed Bascones as the bus was quite empty and he appeared to be annoying other passengers. They both got off at the bus stop opposite Clapham South tube station at about 4am.

As she walked along Malwood Road Bascones suddenly pushed her over. She managed to get up and told him she would call the police. Bascones verbally abused her. She then decided to take a different route home, walking back towards Balham Hill.

As she got to the junction of Malwood Road and Alderbrook Road, the woman saw Bascones again. He ran towards her and pushed her against a wall. He took her glasses off her face and tried to take her phone. He then sexually assaulted her. She began to scream and as a passing delivery driver stopped to help, Bascones ran off. Two residents also came to the victim’s aid.

Officers from Wandsworth CID began an investigation and Bascones was identified from CCTV obtained from the bus.

Bascones was arrested on 20th July at Stansted airport after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was charged with one count of sexual assault. He appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on 22nd July and was remanded into custody.

Detective Constable Jo Barnard, who led the investigation for Wandsworth police, said, "Jorge Bascones targeted his victim not once but twice in one night. After she got off the bus Bascones deliberately pushed her forcibly to the ground. She managed to get up and decided to alter her route home. After a few minutes she saw Bascones again following her into Alderbrook Road. He then subjected her to a frightening sexual assault.

"Thankfully her screams alerted a passing delivery driver and two residents who stopped to help her and Bascones fled.

"Bascones is a predator who went out of his way to target his victim. I hope today's conviction will go some way to help the victim move forward with her life."
