A woman died last night (December 8th) after a boat capsized near Wandsworth Bridge. A man who was also in the boat has been hospitalised.

Emergency services were alerted at around 11.45pm after screams were heard coming from the Thames, east of Wandsworth Bridge. The man was rescued from the river within minutes, but crews searched for nearly half an hour before the woman was found unconscious further down the river. Rescue teams fought to resuscitate her but she died in hospital overnight.

Their boat, which rescue services described as a rowing boat or kayak, was submerged in the water.

The man, who had managed to cling to the boat after it capsized near Plantation Wharf, is now in a stable condition and police are tracing the woman's next of kin. It is not known why the pair were on the river and police are not treating the incident as suspicious.
