Wandsworth Living Streets Group Launches

Seeking safe, attractive and enjoyable streets in the borough

Nine Elms Cycling

Wandsworth Living Streets group was launched on 8 November at a meeting in central Wandsworth. The group, which is part of national charity Living Streets (formerly the Pedestrians Association), will campaign for more pleasant streets and public spaces in the borough of Wandsworth.

They will campaign for wider pavements, better crossings, comfortable places to sit down… and quieter, more peaceful roads. At its launch meeting, campaigning ideas discussed included the introduction of a 'standard' 20mph speed limit in the borough, and local action in support of the Mayor of London's 'Year of Walking' planned for 2011.

Newly elected Wandsworth Living Streets Chair, Susie Morrow, says:"It's timely to establish a Wandsworth Living Streets Group, to work towards safe, attractive and enjoyable streets in our borough. This affects everyone, of whatever age, and wherever they live."

The Group's Secretary, Robert Molteno, says:"We look forward to campaigning as local citizens to improve the streets in our borough for pedestrians, in partnership with the authorities who help shape our streets and public realm. Everyone with an interest in Living Streets agenda is welcome to get involved".

Living Streets was formed in 1929 as the Pedestrians Association and has a distinguished history of campaigning for pedestrians and for the 'walkability' of our streets and roads. The organisation is the national charity that stands up for pedestrians. Living Streets works towards 'safe, attractive and enjoyable' streets, which encourage people to walk and which are welcoming to everyone, whatever their level of mobility.
