New Police Inspector For West Wandsworth

Jayme Johnson explains his new role

Newly appointed Inspector Jayme Johnson will lead the Wandsworth and Putney Safer Neighbourhoods Teams. He is responsible for twenty police officers and sixteen police community support officers who police the wards of Thamesfield, Fairfield, West Hill, West Putney, East Putney, Southfields and Roehampton.

Jayme brings experience in both uniform and detective roles and has worked in other parts of London, including Tower Hamlets and Hammersmith and Fulham.

He said: “I am grateful that I have been handed a team of high-performing officers, who are out on foot everyday in their wards, keeping on top of crime and anti-social behaviour.”

Jayme’s arrival coincides with the restructuring of local policing in all London boroughs over the coming months. Wandsworth is scheduled to move to the new model in the autumn. Johnson explains what the changes mean: “To make savings, as well as improve our service to the public, we are changing the way we work. The people of Putney and Wandsworth will see more police officers on the streets because more officers will be specifically allocated to police neighbourhoods – to listen and respond to local concerns and investigate local crime. Safer Neighbourhoods Teams’ hours will extend too, with local officers on duty from 7am until at least midnight, seven days a week.

“Every ward will have one police officer and one community support officer who will be that ward’s point of contact. These officers won’t be taken away for other duties, and will know their patch inside out and be there for residents and businesses.

“In addition to these officers, I will have other police officers who I will deploy where required across the neighbourhood area, to prevent and disrupt crime and tackle those who choose to offend on my patch. I will be held accountable for crime in my seven wards in Putney and Wandsworth. It will be my job to ensure the wards get the resources they need.

"It is a pleasure to be working in the London Borough of Wandsworth. As a local resident myself, I enjoy this corner of London very much and will do everything I can to continue the work of my predecessors to keep crime low.

“Putney and Wandsworth are great places to live and do business, but I don’t want this to be the case for criminals. I commit to my team serving local residents, businesses and visitors as best we can, and repeatedly target the very few who repeatedly commit crime.”

Inspector Johnson is holding a meeting at St Mary’s Church, Putney
on Wednesday 10th July 2013 at 7pm, where all residents, businesses and visitors are invited to attend to meet the inspector, and hear about the very latest local policing activity.
