Inmate Found Hanged In Wandsworth Prison Cell

57-year-old Colin Varley had been convicted of burglary

A prisoner in HMP Wandsworth has died after being found hanged in his cell.

Despite staff attempted to resuscitate him he was pronounced dead shortly after midday last Thursday.

Mr Varley, who had not been on suicide watch, had been released on parole after serving part of a two year sentence for burglary, but had been returned to custody after he had breached the terms of his licence.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation into Mr Varley’s death.
