South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust has made an appeal against the council’s decision to refuse planning permission for the redevelopment of the Springfield Hospital site.
In December last year members of the council's planning applications committee unanimously rejected the scheme on the grounds that it would put too much strain on the local transport network, and result in an unacceptable impact on adjacent Metropolitan Open Land.
The outline scheme included 839 new homes, a new hospital and 3,700 square metres of mixed retail, commercial space. The plan also involved the demolition or alteration of several of the site's listed buildings, the removal of the golf course and the creation of a new public park.
The appeal will be the subject of a public inquiry which will begin on Tuesday 8th November 2011 at Springfield Hospital.
The final decision on whether to overturn the council's decision will be made by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles. His ruling is expected by the end of January 2012.
During the public consultation on the planning application, the council received thousands of representations from local people opposed to the scheme. These views will be considered at the appeal hearing but residents can also submit additional comments directly to the Planning Inspectorate by email or by post:
