Head Named For New Southfields School

Simon Uttley to join Saint John Bosco College

A Headteacher has been appointed to lead the borough’s new Catholic secondary school, Saint John Bosco College, which will open this September.

Simon Uttley is currently Headteacher of St Paul's Catholic College in Sunbury-on-Thames, where he has overseen a steady improvement in standards and outcomes.

Saint John Bosco will be a specialist business and enterprise college and will have international school status, with partner schools in several countries and opportunities for students to travel. The school will be based on the former John Paul II site in Princes Way, Southfields, which will receive over a half a million pounds of renovation work before the school opens in September.

Existing students from Salesian College will transfer to the Princes Way site, where they will be taught together with former John Paul II pupils and the new Year 7 intake. A sixth form will open in September 2012.

Nearly all the staffing appointments have already been made, with a number of teachers from the existing schools moving to the new school.

Saint John Bosco was originally due to open in new buildings on the current Salesian College site in north Battersea.  This has been delayed while funding is secured, and it is anticipated that this the move will still happen within the next two or three years.

New Head Simon Uttley says: "This will be an exciting school from the word go. It's a brand new school, with new teachers, new facilities and a new vision, and we have very high expectations of what we will achieve here."
