York Road Closure Causes Chaos

Bus collides with scaffold resulting in severe local traffic delays

York Road has been closed to traffic between Plough Road and Wandsworth Roundabout since the weekend, but is expected to be reopened by Wednesday.

The closure was due to a road traffic accident at the junction with Wynter Street when a bus with collided with a scaffold, making the scaffold unsafe. Operatives are currently on site working to make sure the scaffold is structurally sound and does not pose a risk to residents and users of the road and footpath.

Pedestrians are not affected, although the northern footway (the footpath closest to the river) will be closed for safety reasons while the scaffold is repaired.

Local residents have made the following comments:

" The road closure totally paralysed an extremely wide swath of wandsworth. Was it totally necessary. My business was totally disrupted by what was in essence a minor RTA."

"Driving from west end to Putney yesterday evening at 5.30pm took 2 hours 40 minutes - an all time record! All junctions jammed. Cars driving down wrong side of road. Not a single traffic/policeman in sight. This congestion was both north and south of river - total paralysis from Chelsea to Tooting."

" I live very close and was woken up by the collapse of the scaffolding about 3ish am! How does a bus crash into scaffolding at that time in the morning with no traffic on the road, rather concerning!"
