by
linking generations of pupils and ex-pupils and enabling wartime memories
of
ex-pupils to be recorded
Elliott
School has been awarded £19,250 to celebrate 60 years since the
end of the Second World War . Today's pupils will be trained in interview
techniques so that high-quality historic data is gathered. The material
produced will be used in the creation of a permanent educational resource
for the benefit of children at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. An exhibition will
be set up using this historic data, focusing on wartime issues such as
evacuation, emergency school, armed forces, industry and merchant marine,
mainly through the eyes of ex-pupils.
Assistant head teacher Michael Tucker said:
"This fantastic opportunity, engineered for us by our school archivist
John Dodwell, will provide our current students with vivid first-hand
accounts of what life in war-time London was really like. At our Remembrance
Ceremonies every year, when the old Elliottonians and current pupils lay
wreaths at our school war memorial, we try to draw attention to the sacrifices
made by our former students and their families.
"This Home Front Recall Big Lottery Fund award will give us in-depth
resources and unique
experiences which will bring this time in our history to life and help
further to develop
strong links between the younger and older generations in our community.
We are very grateful
for this chance to enhance the life and culture of our school."
Big Lottery Fund London Regional Officer, Russell Darbon said:
" The Home Front Recall and Heroes Return schemes have proved to
be exceptionally popular and we are now extending the deadlines for the
two programmes to 31 May 2005 and announcing an extra £10million
of funding."
Liz Forgan, Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said:
"The debt we owe to those who participated in the Second World War
effort is immense and one that must never be forgotten. I can think of
no better way of using Heritage Lottery Fund cash than to help support
this tremendous programme. It will preserve and honour the memories and
bravery of countless men and women ensuring that their sacrifice is remembered
by future generations."
