Boosting Breast Feeding In The Borough

Find help and advice on Tuesday at ASDA

In celebration of Breastfeeding Awareness Week Monday 21 – Sunday 27 June 2010, health visitors alongside breastfeeding peer support workers will be at Asda in Roehampton on Tuesday 22 June, offering help, advice and breastfeeding tips to new and expectant mothers as well as their partners, friends and families. Breastfeeding peer support workers are local mums who have breastfed their babies and now use their experiences to help new mums.

Now in its 17th year, this annual event raises awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby and encourages everyone to acknowledge a mother’s right to breastfeed her child at any time.

European breastfeeding rates are some of the lowest in the world, and while 90% of women in Wandsworth initiate  breastfeeding, many give up within six weeks. So staff at NHS Wandsworth are hoping that their local event, together with ongoing promotional work will help increase in the number of women continuing to feed their babies in this way, until they are at least six months old. This work includes setting up breastfeeding cafés with the borough’s businesses, the peer support programme, providing breastfeeding information and a specialist website www.wandsworthlittlefeet.nhs.uk for new mums and dads.

If you’re not in Roehampton on the day, but would like further information about help with breastfeeding in Wandsworth, please contact Helen Simpson, Specialist Health Visitor on 07748 328635 or visit www.wandsworthlittlefeet.nhs.uk
