Communities across the country are coming together to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe.

Victory in Europe Day – known as VE Day – marks the penultimate chapter in the Second World War when fighting came to an end in Europe.

VE Day is on 8 May 2025, however, the Early May Bank Holiday on Monday 5 May is being dedicated to nationwide community celebrations.

To mark the occasion Wandsworth Council has launched a commemorative online hub filled with stories of people from the borough who lived through the war.

From the first-hand experiences of a female gunner who helped defend the nation against airborne attacks after her brother’s death at Dunkirk, to memories of VE Day celebrations from a military veteran, the hub highlights the era’s history from those who were there.

You can discover the incredible story of a tortoise found on a bombsite in Tooting, find out how Wandsworth was targeted by enemy fire, and hear how the capital celebrated with a spectacular Victory Parade.

To mark this important date, the council will be lighting up Wandsworth Town Hall and flying a flag above the building on 6 May.

Sana Jafri, Mayor of Wandsworth, said, “It is fantastic to see such a significant national celebration, which will bring people together up and down the country, embraced across Wandsworth.

“We are delighted that so many local communities will host a street party for their neighbours, families and friends to share food, get to know each other better and remember the heroes behind the historic 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.

“I’m looking forward to attending many over the Early May Bank Holiday and sharing in the community joy.”
