Brand New Playground Unveiled at Wandsworth Park

Wandsworth Park’s brand-new playground was officially opened this Wednesday (2 July) , alongside the unveiling of new wildflower meadow boards.
Children from nearby Brandlehow Primary School were in attendance to see Cllr Paul White cut the ribbon and they enjoyed exploring the new facilities, learning about biodiversity from the informative boards and looking for different species of insects in the meadow.
Located just off Putney Bridge Road opposite the tennis courts, the upgraded playground has been designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind. It features modern, durable equipment that aims to encourage imaginative play, climbing, swinging, and social interaction.
Wandsworth’s Year of Play will see more than 15 new or refurbished play spaces being delivered across the borough this year, alongside improvements to existing playgrounds and play spaces, ensuring all children can access high-quality play close to home.

The newly installed wildflower meadow interpretation boards invite people to discover the wildlife now thriving in Wandsworth Park. The boards highlight how the meadow supports pollinators like bees and butterflies and showcase species to spot, including the small skipper butterfly, thick-legged flower beetle, and common pipistrelle bat.
The wildflower meadow was created using sustainable techniques, including mowing with Shire horses to protect soil health and reduce emissions. It forms part of the council’s wider Biodiversity Strategy, which is focused on boosting habitats, tackling climate change, and connecting residents to nature.

Cllr Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, said, “We’re delighted to open this wonderful new playground for children and to celebrate the thriving wildflower meadow. This is a fantastic example of how we are investing in our parks to create places where people can play, move and connect with nature. Projects like this are so important because they help tackle the climate emergency while making our parks even more enjoyable for everyone. Whether you’re here to play, picnic or watch the wildlife, there’s something for everyone.”

Wandsworth Park is a Grade II listed Edwardian park, cherished for its stunning riverside views, avenue of London plane trees, and a balance of formal gardens and open spaces. The park provides a wide range of facilities for the community, including sports areas, a golf putting green near the café, and spots to enjoy nature and river life.
