Wandsworth Council has announced a major expansion of its on-street bikehangar programme, proposing 116 new secure storage units across the borough as part of what it says is already one of the largest bikehangar rollouts in the UK. Bikehangars, each holding up to six bikes and occupying half a parking space, have become a familiar sight on Wandsworth streets: the council reports 346 hangars installed so far and is also planning 14 further hangars on local estates to boost secure cycle parking.
The council has written to residents about proposed locations and opened a consultation that closes on 20 November; residents can view the proposals and comment via the council’s website.
Wandsworth is also promoting its Access for All concession, which offers eligible residents 50% off annual hangar memberships to help make active travel affordable.
Wandsworth’s move comes amid a wider surge in London boroughs expanding on-street cycle storage to meet rising demand for secure parking. Hackney has committed to a multi-year programme that will add hundreds more hangars, aiming to make it the capital’s most hangar-dense borough, while other councils such as Camden and Southwark have their own phased hangar programmes and regular consultations to identify suitable sites and manage resident feedback.
Councils differ in pricing and eligibility but share common goals: reducing street clutter from insecurely parked bikes, supporting everyday cycling and enabling residents who lack private storage to cycle more often.
The council says requests from residents continue to shape the programme and that anyone across Wandsworth can request a hangar near their home or workplace; proposed installations are assessed on demand, location suitability and neighbour feedback.
Alongside installation, the council points people to free cycle training, route planning and information on its wider cycling strategy on its website.
