Wandsworth Council is hailing its free bulky waste collection service as a success with 10,000 bookings and over 23,000 items picked up since launch.

This includes 5,000 items of home furniture like wardrobes, tables, chairs and shelves plus 2,600 beds, 2,400 mattresses, 1,500 sofas, 1,200 kitchen appliances, almost 10,000 sacks and much more, saving thousands of trips to the tip.

Each free collection can be for up to four items or 12 sacks of waste, and the maximum waiting time has been cut to just one week.

The services received an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 in a recent resident survey.

“The free bulky waste collection is a very good service”, said Marie from Balham. “It was simple and easy to make a booking. The evening before the collection I left the bulky items outside my property and they were collected the next day."

Nicky from Furzedown added, “Not having a car, there's no easy alternative way to get rid of bulky waste. This was simple and efficient and is of real benefit to the people who live in Wandsworth.”

Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, praised the success of the new service so far. “It’s wonderful to see so many people making use of this new service. Whether you’re moving house, don’t have a car, or just need to get rid of some large items, book your free collection and we’ll take care of the rest.”

Paul White added, “We’re proud to be offering a service which makes life easier for local people, while maintaining the lowest Council Tax in the country.”
