Fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus used fire escape hoods to lead a woman and a child to safety after a fire broke out in a tower block on Battersea.

The blaze took hold in a four roomed flat on the 16th story of the building on Surrey Lane at around 3.54am on Tuesday morning (25 April).

London Fire Brigade sent eight fire engines and around 80 firefighters from Battersea, Chelsea, Clapham, Fulham, Wandsworth and Lambeth fire stations.

The woman and the child were treated for smoke inhalation on scene by London Ambulance Service paramedics. Another woman and child on the 20th floor were also led to safety by crews wearing breathing apparatus.

The fire was under control by 5.08am by which time the flat was badly damaged.

The Brigade’s 999 Control officers gave fire survival guidance to the residents.

Fire escape hoods provide members of the public with up to 15 minutes protection from four of the main fire gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein) and can be worn by conscious or unconscious people. If more than 15 minutes protection is required then another hood can be given to each wearer. They do not provide oxygen but temporarily filter toxic smoke to make breathing easier.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
