With weekend working on King George’s Park Super Sewer site now over, residents can finally see the finished area of parkland with its new landscaping.

Footpaths have been laid, trees planted and new foliage planted.

The temporary footpath closure on Buckhold Road has now been removed with the usual access to the road now reinstated.

Tideway, the company responsible for building the Super Sewer under London explained, “The team is focusing on the architecture and landscaping of the site and the installation of the mechanical and electrical equipment that is required to operate the super sewer.”

The Super Sewer, also known as the Thames Tideway Tunnel, is being built to solve the problem of sewage overflow into the River Thames. The capital has been relying on a Victorian sewer system built more than a century and a half ago for a population less than half the size it is now, and unable to cope with all of today’s demands on it.

Over the decades this has resulted in millions of tonnes of raw, untreated sewage overspill making its way into the Thames each year. The 25km long Super Sewer system is being constructed under the capital’s river from the Acton Storms Tanks in Ealing to the Beckton Sewage Treatment Works in the far east of London.

Thames Tideway’s infrastructure - its finance, building, maintenance and operation - is being provided by Bazalgette Tunnel Ltd, which is named after the engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette who created the original sewage system in central London.

Tideway is owned by a consortium of investors - Allianz, Amber Infrastructure, Dalmore Capital and DIF – which has extensive experience of investing in, and managing, a wide range of infrastructure assets in the UK and overseas. Three million pensioners have an indirect investment in Tideway through UK pension funds managed by its investors.

The tunnel is set to cost £4.3bn to complete, and the project is being paid for by Thames Water’s 15 million wastewater customers, through their bills. Despite escalating costs to the Super Sewer build, Thames Water customers will see payments rise by no more than £25 per year according to Tideway.

Tideway estimates the final date of completion for the Super Sewer across London will be 2025, a decade after preparatory work started on the sites.
