Fourth in line to the throne, Princess Charlotte, this week started school at Thomas's in Battersea.

Both The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge both escorted their visibly excited four-year-old through the school gates to meet her new headmistress.

Prince George, who is now six, joined in for the family photo in the schoolyard before both young royals made their way into their respective classrooms.

The young princess will be known as Charlotte Cambridge and will be taught all the usual basic reception year subjects along with Art, Ballet, Drama, ICT, French, Music and PE. The fee paying school currently charges £6,305 a term for a family's second child in the pre-prep section of the school.

The Duchess of Cambridge looked particularly delighted to be present at Princess Charlotte's first morning - she had not been able to accompany Prince George on his first day as she was in the early stages of pregnancy with Prince Louis and suffering from the highly debilitating vomiting and nausea condition hyperemesis gravidarum.
