After a successful bid for funding from the council
The Healthy Street Everyday Steering Group
Tooting is to be part of the three-year Healthy Streets Everyday project after a successful bid for funding from Wandsworth Council.
The project is run by the Cross River Partnership (CRP) and funded by the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund, with match-funding from 16 participating boroughs. The aim is to reduce air pollution, make streets more pedestrian-friendly, increase walking and cycling and decrease the use of private cars.
The news follows Wandsworth Council's pledge to play its part in tackling climate change, with the goal of being carbon neutral by 2030 and a zero-emission council by 2050.
The CRP will now work with the council to draw up detailed proposals, but work will include
The different boroughs taking part will help each other and share what they’ve learnt at regular meetings of a Steering Group.
Wandsworth has already given its support to Car Free Day and has waived road closure charges for organisers of street parties and play streets on that day.
Healthy Streets Everyday is the second CRP project that Tooting will be part of. Recently it was also one of 13 areas in London to participate in the second phase of the Clean Air Villages project which aims to improve local air quality by reducing emissions from business deliveries and servicing
This will include support to help local businesses, schools and organisations share suppliers with their neighbours and use suppliers who deliver using ultra-low emission vehicles, like the ones in the Cross River Partnership’s Ultra-Low Emission Suppliers Directory launched this week.
Wandsworth’s cabinet member for air quality Cllr Paul Ellis said, “These two projects together should have a significant effect on Tooting’s air quality and will help us achieve the ambitious targets we have set ourselves to become inner London’s greenest borough.
“We’re pleased to be working with the Cross River Partnership, the other London boroughs and, most importantly, our residents, schools, businesses and community groups to make them a success.â€
