Join A Charity Run To Help Local Riot Victims

Organised by a Clapham running club to raise funds for the Wandsworth Community Safety Trust

A charity run is being held by a local running club to raise money for people affected by emergencies such as last week’s riots in Clapham Junction.

The Clapham Pioneers' 5.2km Affected by the Riots run will be held from 7pm next Tuesday (August 23). The cash will go into the Wandsworth Community Safety Trust. This is ring-fenced for emergency situations like the riots or natural disasters such as flooding.

Chairman of the Wandsworth Community Safety Trust, Cllr Jim Maddan, said:

"This is another example of how local people are coming together to help each other and rebuild their neighbourhood following last week's terrible riot. Clapham Junction is a symbol of decent people's determination not to let the rioters win, and events such as this show that community spirit is stronger than ever and that the fightback continues.

He continued:
"The cash will be used to ease hardship caused by this and future emergencies. I would urge as many people as possible to either take part or give generously."

The run follows the launch of a community initiative called Battersea Buzz, aimed at bringing local people, businesses and councillors together following the riots.  Ideas include fundraising events, a mentoring scheme for young people, a street celebration, a community art project and closer working with the Battersea Crime Prevention Panel.

If you would like to take part in next week's run, register on the day at the Pioneers shop at 34 Old Town, Clapham from 6.15pm. There will be a £5 minimum fee to take part. You can also register your interest via www.facebook.com/ClaphamPiONEERsRunningClub.
