A new initiative allowing residents, businesses and community groups to sponsor street and park trees has launched in Wandsworth. The scheme, delivered through the national charity project Trees for Streets, aims to increase tree planting across the borough and support wider efforts to improve biodiversity and urban habitats.
Trees for Streets, co-founded by Trees for Cities and Start with Local, enables people to suggest locations for new trees via an online platform. Once a request is submitted, the council surveys the site to assess suitability. If approved, a two-to-three-metre tree is planted during the next planting season, which runs from November to April. Groups of neighbours can also fundraise collectively for multiple trees, and local businesses are able to sponsor planting as part of their community engagement work.
Wandsworth Council says the scheme aligns with its environmental goals, including increasing tree cover, strengthening wildlife habitats and improving the quality of local streets. The borough’s tree-planting programme forms part of its broader response to climate-related challenges such as rising temperatures and heavier rainfall.
Urban trees are widely recognised for their environmental benefits. They provide shade, help cool surrounding areas through evapotranspiration, and absorb rainwater through their roots and canopy, reducing the risk of surface flooding. Research also links access to green spaces with improved wellbeing and increased physical activity.
Councillor Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, said the scheme would give residents a practical way to contribute to local environmental improvements. He noted that sponsored trees can support wildlife, provide shade during warmer summers and help manage rainfall during wetter winters.
Carrie Hume, Programme Director at Trees for Streets, said the charity was pleased to be working with Wandsworth to expand the borough’s “urban forest”. She said the scheme aims to make it easier for communities to bring more greenery into their neighbourhoods.
