Wandsworth Council has unveiled three new mobile CCTV vans as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and improve neighbourhood responsiveness. The vehicles, equipped with advanced surveillance technology, will allow the council to deploy monitoring capabilities more flexibly across the borough, targeting areas where visibility and deterrence are most needed.
The initiative is funded through the council’s £9 million Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, which supports a range of local improvements under the “Decade of Renewal” programme. The fund is financed through developer contributions via the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL), rather than council tax.
Graeme Henderson, Cabinet Member for Health, said the vans represent a significant step forward in the council’s approach to crime prevention. “The new mobile CCTV cars will allow us to be more proactive, responsive and visible, ensuring our residents feel safe in their communities,” he said.
In addition to the mobile units, the council has announced an expansion of its CCTV monitoring hours. The Joint Control Centre (JCC), which oversees more than 1,200 cameras across Wandsworth, will now operate an additional 150 hours per month. The JCC also plays a critical role in managing out-of-hours emergencies, including fires, floods, and road traffic incidents, and provides first-response support in council housing areas. In 2024, the centre logged over 62,000 calls.

The council emphasises that the funding model allows for infrastructure upgrades without increasing the financial burden on residents. The mobile vans are expected to support both routine surveillance and rapid response in areas experiencing antisocial behaviour or public safety concerns.
A video of the launch has been shared by the council, showcasing the new vehicles and their intended role in community safety.
