Residents living in flats above shops in Wandsworth’s busy town centres will now benefit from twice-weekly rubbish and recycling collections, as part of the borough’s ongoing efforts to improve street cleanliness and waste services.
The new service, which doubles the previous weekly collection schedule, is the latest measure introduced under Wandsworth Council’s Cleaner Borough Plan. The plan aims to enhance waste management, reduce litter, and foster greater pride in local streets.
Cabinet Member for Environment Paul White said the change responds directly to feedback from residents in flats above shops, who often face limited bin space. “This new service gives them an extra collection day, making life easier while helping keep our streets clean for everyone,” he said. “It’s another step forward in our Cleaner Borough Plan, and we’re proud to offer it while maintaining the lowest Council Tax in the country.”
The expanded service complements other recent initiatives, including:
Since the plan’s launch in June 2024, Wandsworth has collected nearly 8,000 tonnes of extra recycling, reflecting strong resident engagement.
Residents living in affected properties have been contacted directly with details of their new collection days. Lamppost posters are also being installed along high streets to reinforce the schedule. Waste and recycling should continue to be placed in the usual street location by 6:30am on collection days.
